In this workshop, graduate students and writing instructors John Mark Brown, Zach Kennedy-Lopez, and Andrea Quinn will lead LGBTQIA+ students in an exploration of the “Coming Out” narrative. We will begin with a series of questions: What does the typical coming out narrative look like? How has that narrative worked to make linear the decidedly non-linear process of coming out? If coming out is a continual process, how do we conceptualize our own coming out and communicate that conceptualization to others? Through a series of writing exercises, we will work to isolate significant moments in our own journeys and develop effective ways to convey the significance of those moments to our readers.

This event is part of LGBTQIA+ History Month.

About the facilitators

John Mark Brown grew up on a small farm in Southern Illinois. They are an MFA candidate at Rutgers—Camden, a Philadelphia resident, and a cardigan enthusiast, with work appearing in Indiana Review Online, Hobart, Stirring, and Random Sample, among others.

Born and raised on the left coast, Zach Kennedy-Lopez is a cat-parent who likes swimming and Latin American electronic music. Their work has been supported by the Patrick Rosal Dice Fellowship, as well as fellowships from Writing by Writers, and has appeared in The Southampton Review, Mortar Magazine, X-R-A-Y Literary Magazine, and other publications. They can be found on Instagram and Twitter, both @queerbooksloth.

Andrea Quinn is an MA Candidate at Rutgers-Camden and an instructor in First Year Writing. Her research interests include the construction and intersections of space, place, and identity in queer children’s and young adult literature. Her general interests include cryptids, monsters, and extraterrestrials. She blames Fox Mulder. Andrea lives in Collingswood with her cats, Sunny and Kevin. They are very happy together.
